I’ve used archetypal depictions of masculinity as a model for my behavior since college. I see it as rebelling against the relativistic ethical systems taught to me as a child. I think people need more certainty in their lives, or need to feel a certain amount of personal heroism. Anchoring yourself in any external ideology will eventually fail. This isn’t a narcissistic egoism, it’s an admission of our limitations as human beings, creatures of the earth, solely concerned with our ascension toward heaven.
